A group of Adobe employees are upset over the company’s decision to host its MAX annual conference in Florida, citing the state’s “hostile” laws against marginalized groups. Earlier this month, more than 500 Adobe employees signed an internal petition demanding the company reconsider the location of the annual conference, scheduled to take place in Miami later this year. As company leaders reiterated their commitment to Miami for this year’s event, some Adobe employees took to the Slack channel to express their dismay. “I’m shocked and disappointed at the lack of consideration in that call,” one of the employees wrote in the internal Slack channel. "Adobe MAX is a celebration of our community and a platform to showcase the incredible impact that creativity has around the world.

The Federal Election Commission deadline is here for end-of-year finance reports that will reveal how much money the presidential candidates had raised recently, and how much cash their campaigns had on hand. The end-of-year fund-raising and spending reports can reveal a lot about the trajectory of a presidential campaign, and the health of its money operation. Spending by presidential campaigns alone — not counting super PACs — topped $4 billion for the 2020 election. Just this week alone, a Democratic super PAC supporting Mr. Biden began reserving $250 million in advertising in battleground states, scheduled to begin after the Democratic National Convention in August. For example, the main super PAC supporting Senate Democrats has about $61.5 million on hand, compared with $29.1 million for the top PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates.

Mr. DeSantis, who endorsed Mr. Trump on his way out of the race, earned some praise and a reprieve from the former president’s persistent name-calling. In fact, most have now thrown their support behind Mr. Trump, underscoring the steep challenges she faces in securing allies to challenge the famously spiteful Mr. Trump. The betrayal of Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, a former Haley ally who endorsed Mr. Trump, seemed to particularly sting Ms. Haley. Chris Christie of New Jersey has previously signaled his reluctance to endorse Ms. Haley, and she has countered that she did not want his endorsement.) What remains unclear on the eve of the primary is just how much impact Mr. DeSantis’s withdrawal will have in New Hampshire.

In a short video on Sunday, the Florida governor looked natty in a blue suit and red tie, every hair perfectly in place as he papered over his deeply imperfect campaign. He touted his own leadership and, perhaps with an eye toward running again in 2028, endorsed the Republican kingmaker, Donald Trump. But watching DeSantis’s now-famous awkward smile and listening to his unnatural cadence, it was hard not to think: Yeah. Mr. DeSantis is a successful governor of a major state and a smart guy with a picture-perfect family. On the presidential campaign trail, he was robotic and awkward, rude and arrogant, with the interpersonal skills of poorly designed A.I.

Let’s be blunt about the stakes of the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday. If Donald J. Trump wins decisively, as the polls suggest, he will be on track to win the Republican nomination without a serious contest. Ron DeSantis’s decision to suspend his campaign and endorse Mr. Trump is only the latest example. The polling by state isn’t much better for Nikki Haley, the only remaining opponent for Mr. Trump. He leads Ms. Haley by at least 30 points in all of the states after New Hampshire until Super Tuesday.

And DeSantis himself is no longer around as a political deflector shield as Haley heads into Tuesday’s crucial New Hampshire primary. A CNN poll released Sunday, before DeSantis withdrew from the race, found he was the first choice of 6% of likely New Hampshire GOP primary voters. Another 3% of likely GOP primary voters said they’d vote for someone else. To them, DeSantis dropping out (and quickly endorsing Trump) wouldn’t make Haley look like the safer bet, but Trump. This rally-around-Trump message likely makes Haley supporters even more of an isolated minority in the GOP firmament.

AMES, Iowa—Ron DeSantis says he will never back down. The next three days will test that confidence. Needing a strong performance in Monday’s Iowa caucuses, the first nominating contest of the 2024 Republican presidential primary race, the Florida governor has made the state his beachhead—even if his goal is to come in second place behind Donald Trump.

The main super PAC supporting Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign has been rocked by another significant departure, as Adam Laxalt, a friend and former roommate of the Florida governor, has stepped down as chairman of the group. Mr. Laxalt, who unsuccessfully ran to become a Republican senator in Nevada in 2022, lived with Mr. DeSantis when he was training as a naval officer. He said in the note that he was still committed to Mr. DeSantis’s becoming president. The departure represents the second major departure from Never Back Down in the last two weeks. In a statement put out by the group after the resignation, Mr. Jankowski said that his differences at the group went “well beyond” strategic arguments, without explaining more.

That magical time when friends and family gather round the table to share the love, reminisce — and bicker endlessly about politics and the state of the nation. But there is, in fact, so much to be grateful for, especially in the political realm. Because while you may need to squint to see the silver lining in the political clouds, it is important to do so. Nothing is quite as dangerous as good people despairing and disengaging from politics, ceding the field to the crooks and cranks. I’m thankful that elections this year earned Republicans another spanking for their efforts to curtail women’s reproductive rights.

Among the catalysts are Palestinian and Jewish-led groups that have been active for years in opposing Israeli policies toward the Palestinians and who now demand a cease-fire in Gaza. The groups have roots in a movement known as BDS, which calls for the boycott, divestment and sanction of Israel. That campaign generated heated rhetoric long before Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7 and Israel launched its counteroffensive. Advocates wrote op-eds for campus newspapers with appeals to protect Palestinian human rights, often accusing Israel of colonialism and racism. Protests have led to disruptions on Capitol Hill, at a major train station in Chicago and New York City’s Grand Central Station.

Ron DeSantis’s presidential campaign has found an unusual way to pay for his habit of flying in private planes: passing the cost to the better-funded super PAC that is increasingly intertwined with his operation. The super PAC, Never Back Down, pays for Mr. DeSantis’s travel only on days when the events he is attending are hosted solely by the group, the people familiar with the arrangement said. The super PAC now hosts many of his events in early primary states. Federal candidates can appear as “featured guests” of super PACs, but whether a super PAC can also pay for transportation is less clear cut. Super PACs are not allowed to coordinate with campaigns, and campaign finance experts say that Mr. DeSantis’s arrangement — in which he is campaigning for president as a guest of a super PAC — could test that rule.

Those institutions and practices bound Americans together in a world below our more divisive national politics. Even if there is a border crisis, for example, the state of Wyoming can’t do much about it. Despite that obstacle, the old guard is having some success defending its own way of doing politics. Of course, on their own, such rear-guard tactics won’t be enough to save the Wyoming way. Champions of the old way must also do the hard work of aggressively recruiting local candidates and precinct committee chairs.

To the Editor:Re “It’s Not ‘Sex Work.’ It’s Prostitution,” by Pamela Paul (column, Aug. 18), about how the term “sex work” legitimizes the exploitative sex trade:Ms. Paul’s article is courageous, as evenhanded and thoughtful as it is provocative. As a former Title VI-funded doctoral fellow whose thesis explored the effects of the professionalization of traditional female occupations, I was steeped in radical feminist theory, and I know the theoretical basis for the notion that sex “work” involves choice and agency. Ron DeSantis’s remark that slaves gained useful skills while being treated like chattel property. Joel M. YoungPlacitas, N.M.To the Editor:Pamela Paul’s opposition to the term “sex work” is akin to opposing the term “domestic workers” for maids because exploitation and trafficking are common in domestic service. Rather than denying workers their rightful status in industries rife with abuse, we should fight for enhanced labor protections.

Last month, the Florida Department of Education announced that grade-school teachers could use videos produced by Dennis Prager’s PragerU Kids in their classrooms. PragerU is no more a university than Trump University was. In fine type at the bottom of its webpage, it admits that “PragerU is not an accredited university, nor do we claim to be. We don’t offer degrees, but we do provide educational, entertaining, pro-American videos for every age.”In reality, PragerU is little more than a propaganda media site. The Southern Poverty Law Center takes an even dimmer view of its credentials, saying, “PragerU seems to be yet another node on the internet connecting conservative media consumers to the dark corners of the extreme right.”

Ron DeSantis’s legislation about what students can or can’t be exposed to. Cancel Shakespeare. But to understand his genius — and his indelible legacy on literature — students need to be exposed to the whole of his work, even, perhaps especially, the naughty bits. The untangled meaning here: Your love ultimately belongs to me, sir, even if women (sometimes) enjoy your prick. Solving the Trump problem is the master key to this election, and no one has found it. Mr. DeSantis, like almost every other Republican in the race, adopted a strategy of never criticizing Mr. Trump, for fear of alienating his ardent base. The theory was that at some point Mr. Trump would disqualify himself, and Mr. DeSantis would be positioned to inherit his supporters. But now, after three criminal indictments have failed to dent Mr. Trump’s popularity with Republican voters, pressure is mounting on Mr. DeSantis to stop pretending Mr. Trump isn’t in the race and take him on directly. “Trump is the de facto Republican incumbent, and in order to beat an incumbent you have to give voters a fire-able offense,” said Terry Sullivan, who managed Senator Marco Rubio’s presidential campaign in 2016.

The new bureaucracy is an offshoot of Gov. Ron DeSantis’s increasingly muscular push for “parental rights” in education, with new laws and regulations that broadly restrict classroom instruction on gender and sexuality, including in high school, and prevent transgender students and staff members from using group bathrooms that match their gender identity. Teachers will also be barred from asking students for their preferred pronouns and could lose their professional certification for violating the new laws. Course lists and classroom libraries are also under the microscope, with districts seeking to excise material that touches on gender and sexuality, including in classics like “Romeo and Juliet.”Here is how some Florida school districts are interpreting the new laws. They Have a Form for ThatThe new regulations have created a bureaucratic tangle, with several counties sending parents forms that must be filled out if they want their child referred to by something other than their legal name.

The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board has spent the last few months trying to boost Gov. As DeSantis’s campaign has sagged, The Journal’s editorialists have offered him tactical advice for confronting Donald Trump. It will shape the Republican Party in the post-Trump era — however far away that may be — and, by extension, influence the country’s economic policy. A Republican splitThe Journal editorial page represents an outlook that dominated the Republican Party from Ronald Reagan’s presidency in the 1980s until Trump’s arrival in 2016. It includes light regulation, low taxes, cuts to government benefits and high levels of trade and immigration.

Last week, Florida approved an overhaul of its African American history standards, including guidance that middle schoolers should be instructed that “slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”Outrage ensued, including from Vice President Kamala Harris, who blasted the standards, saying, “They insult us in an attempt to gaslight us.”She’s right. But I think the project underway in Florida is far larger, and far more consequential than many comprehend. The insult to Black people — and to the country — is incidental. In the same way that Donald Trump made his bones as America’s white nationalist in chief, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida is trying to make his as the country’s chief Christian nationalist, a subset of white supremacy that holds that God has ordained America as a Christian nation, and that its ideals must be protected from the encroachment of pluralism — racial, religious or otherwise.

It was Dr. Scott Rivkees, the Florida surgeon general. Ron DeSantis had decided that the worst was over for Florida, he said. Mr. DeSantis had begun listening to doctors who believed the virus’s threat was overstated, and he no longer supported preventive measures like limiting indoor dining. Mr. DeSantis was going his own way on Covid. Nearly three years later, the governor now presents his Covid strategy not only as his biggest accomplishment, but as the foundation for his presidential campaign.
